Capacity by Salt Dose
Capacity per regeneration at each salt dose the maker publishes (Whirlpool manual (2023), source). We don't fill in doses between these points. The efficiency rating (5,094 grains per lb) applies only at the 3.4 lb dose.
Our Read
On paper this is the most fully documented big-box softener. Whirlpool publishes three capacity points, the efficiency at the low dose and the regeneration water, and NSF lists the model with the efficiency claim. The catch is the size name. At the salt setting that earns the efficiency rating, it carries 17,300 grains, well under half the 40,000 on the box.Bottom line: A sound, certified choice for city water and small-to-mid households. Size it on the 3.4 lb or 9.0 lb row, not the nameplate.
